Watching David from Tumblr present at GS conference in Vegas. Made me want to go back to Tumblr and try a post. Big broad platform. Very large. Mobile growing fast. Fashion is 15% and largest group.

“We need to get back to focusing on entrepreneurs,” Cohler said. It’s silly to think that innovation is dead — there’s just an aspiration problem. “People aren’t thinking big enough,” he said.” —

Matt Cohler, Benchmark Partners, at TechCrunch Disrupt

I had a conversation last night about whether Silicon Valley (and its cultural sattellites) has become too focused on inconsequential things.  Have we stopped solving problems or responding to needs and instead collectively decided to create demand for the trivial?  Is there a point to Foursquare?  Is Facebook solving anything?

I want to spend some time thinking about this.  The Social megatrend has spawned both the triumph of Pink Chaddi and the tragedy of Tyler Clementi.  The Virtual Goods trend could have positive environmental impact while also causing the pain of economic structural shifts.  While I do not yet know if the hottest tech trends have positive or negative net value, I do not think they can be classified as trivial or inconsequential.
